Aftercare makes all the difference

Every successful transplant requires intensive aftercare, which is crucial for the growth of the tree. A rehabilitation zone is created around the transplanted tree to ensure further nutrient supply and development. This involves digging around the root ball and trimming the roots. Optionally, various growth promoters and soil conditioners are added, which are customised to the respective tree and location.

A watering edge is then created, the tree disc is covered with bark mulch or planted as desired and a trunk protector is installed to protect the tree from the weather. The tree is anchored accordingly for stabilisation. The tree crown is also thinned out in proportion to the reduced root system in order to support optimum growth. Finally, the root ball is thoroughly slurried.

Customised care safeguards the tree population

Subsequent care includes regular watering and monitoring, especially in the first three to five years after transplanting. Opitz offers this care service with its own team and special watering vehicles. The intensity of the watering depends on the climatic conditions as well as the size and location of the tree and is between 200 and 1,000 litres per watering cycle.

Regular inspections of the anchoring, checking for pest infestation and keeping the tree disc free of unwanted growth are essential. However, should problems occur or questions arise regarding site improvement, we are on hand to provide advice and assistance. Before acceptance, we carry out final work such as removing the anchoring, pruning corrections and loosening the tree disc.

Sustainable housing in an urban environment

The issue of housing shortages has been an integral part of the German media for years. Cities and municipalities are struggling to find affordable housing and are calling on politicians to take action. This trend is intensified by the constant influx into urban areas.

What can be done? A quick solution for more living space is urban densification.

Vacant areas within an existing development are (re)utilised as living space. There are many forms of redensification, which can take the form of adding storeys, extensions, closing the edges of blocks of flats, densification within blocks or the general conversion of industrial and office space.

Large trees make a difference

If, for example, green spaces and trees are reduced in the course of redensification of a neighbourhood, the positive effects on the well-being of residents are also reduced. Especially in the summer months, green spaces and trees make an important contribution to equalising the temperature within built-up areas. Planting large trees can reduce the perceived temperature by a good 20˚ C on hot days. Without shade, the perceived temperature at 30˚ C is a good 45˚ C.

In an area planted with large trees, this perceived temperature is reduced to a pleasant 25˚ C. We help you to make urban redensification climate-friendly. Our focus here is on three relevant factors: green space provision, green space design and the degree of sealing of the areas concerned.

In Stralsund, a 16-year-old common oak tree had to be removed to make way for the extension of the aquarium at the German Oceanographic Museum. The 10-metre high tree was excavated using the Optimal 3000 plus and replanted near to the zoo. Click here for the NDR TV video report.

The story about transplanting a mature tree as an illustrated children’s book is a thrilling adventure for young and old alike.

Mature tree transplantation explained in a way that children can understand – that was the approach of author Monika Stahlheber-Meister when she came up with the idea for her children’s book “Die Linde Frieda zieht um” (Frieda the lime tree moves her home). The lime tree Frieda has been standing in the place where she was planted for so long. This is exactly the place where the new kindergarten is to be built. Now things are getting a little tricky for Frieda, what can she do?

20 oaks find a new location on the Isar near Plattling. 20 oaks were moved to a new location using our Optimal planters for the Deggendorf water management authority during a renaturation project on the Lower Isar near Plattling

The 20 oaks on the left bank of the Isar were planted as seedlings 15 years ago by the Plattling river management centre. The trees have now developed into stately oaks of up to 15 metres tall and and a girth of approx. 100 cm.

As the banks had to be largely levelled during the redesign of the section of the Isar that passed through the town of Plattling, the oak trees stood in the way of the necessary construction work. The team from Opitz international was commissioned by the Deggendorf water management authority to professionally transplant the 20 oaks to avoid felling these beautiful trees.

The trees have settled in perfectly at the new location at Färbergies, where extensive renaturation measures have already been carried out.

Europe’s largest trade fair breaks all records. GaLaBau 2018 – a great success!

The 23rd GaLaBau trade fair closed with a new record number of visitors. Over 70,000 trade visitors attended the gathering of the ‘green sector’ in Nuremberg from 12th-15th September.
With 1,253 exhibitors in 14 exhibition halls, the trade fair emphasised its high profile in the GaLaBau sector and recorded an increase in exhibitors of over 10% compared to 2016.

The trade visitors also came from the garden, landscape and open space construction sectors, landscape architecture and planners from federal, state and local authorities.
On the exhibitor side, one in four companies came from outside Germany, and in terms of trade visitors, 10% travelled to Nuremberg from outside Germany to attend this late summer event.

The joint stand of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Großbaumverpflanzung (German association for mature tree transplantation) and the Opitz mature tree moving service was also very popular during the four days of the fair. Many interesting conversations took place, old contacts were renewed and new ones were forged.

The prospective expert agronomists for tree care tree re-habilitation from the Nürnberger Schule (a school for agronomists in Nuremberg) spent a day at the Opitz international headquarters in Heideck.

The future specialists were taught practical knowledge and techniques of mature tree transplantation, including the essential preparation and follow-up.

This day was an important part of the practical training to prepare for what is still the highest non-academic qualification for arborists. We wish all the students success in their final exam!

Spectacular Mature tree transplanting with record-breaking equipment. A spectacular mature tree transplantation yesterday on the grounds of the kbo-Inn-Salzach-Klinikum clinic in Wasserburg left the invited media representatives and employees of the hospital administration wide-eyed in amazement.

7 trees will have to be moved from the area of the planned construction site to make way for the new building. It was unthinkable to just take the chain saw to them; Europe’s largest tree spade machine arrived at the site yesterday instead.

This vehicle digs the tree out, including the root, with huge shovels which is then replanted in its new location.

‘Giant’ trees make way for a new railway line in Gothenburg. Three massive trees were transplanted to make way for the construction of a new tunnel under the Swedish city of Gothenburg. The largest specimen weighed 186 tons and ‘floated’ through the night sky on a 70 m² platform. A railway construction project is under way for local and regional trains in the tunnel for the ‘Västlänken’, the western link. To the video.
